Join us at one of Delano’s most beloved traditions—the St. Patrick’s Parade! What started in 2007 as a last-minute idea has grown into one of the city’s most popular parades, setting the standard for event management.

WSU TAKES DRONE RESEARCH TO NEW HEIGHTS WITH THE SHOCKER FLY LAB!

Wichita State University is stepping up its drone game with the new Shocker Fly Lab, a high-tech space for testing and developing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This nearly $13 million project is all about pushing the boundaries of drone research, giving students, faculty, and industry pros a dedicated spot to experiment and innovate. Located on the Innovation Campus near the Hub for Advanced Materials Research and the John Bardo Center, the lab is set to make WSU a major player in the world of unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

A Two-Phase Takeoff
The project is rolling out in two phases to get things off the ground as quickly as possible:

✈️ Phase 1: First up, WSU is building an open-air flight space covered by a giant net—about 100 feet by 200 feet—with a steel frame that stands 30 to 35 feet tall. This setup lets researchers test drones in a real-world environment without worrying about strict outdoor flying regulations. Basically, it’s like a giant drone playground, but with serious research happening inside.

🛫 Phase 2: The second phase is where things get even cooler. The facility will be fully enclosed with a glass curtain and a seam roof, making it a climate-controlled space for year-round testing. That means no more weather interruptions—just pure, uninterrupted drone experimentation.

Why It Matters
The Shocker Fly Lab isn’t just another research facility—it’s a step toward making WSU a leader in UAV technology. This space will provide incredible opportunities for students and faculty while fostering collaboration with industry experts. Plus, it positions WSU at the forefront of the booming drone industry, opening doors for cutting-edge research, innovation, and job opportunities.

While there’s no official timeline for when it’ll all be finished, the phased approach means students and researchers can start testing as soon as Phase 1 is ready. Stay tuned for updates as this exciting project takes flight!
