Baby Boom at Sedgwick County Zoo: New Arrivals You’ve Got to Meet!
Spring has brought a baby boom to the Sedgwick County Zoo, and the newest arrivals are already stealing the spotlight. From playful elephant calves to a tiny chimpanzee, there’s no shortage of excitement happening behind the scenes—and right out in the open. Here's a look at the newest members of the zoo family!
🐘 Bomani – A History-Making Elephant Calf

Meet Bomani, the zoo’s first-ever surviving African elephant calf, born on April 10 to proud mama Talia. His name means “warrior” in Swahili—a perfect fit for this milestone moment in the zoo’s elephant program. Watching him learn to use his trunk is just about the cutest thing you’ll see all week.
🐘 Kijani – Another Baby Elephant Joins the Herd

Just days later, on April 14, Kijani made his grand debut! Born to mom Xolani, this little guy’s name means “green” in Swahili—a sweet nod to new beginnings. If you catch the herd out and about, there’s a good chance you’ll see the two calves learning to play together (with a lot of splashy water time involved).
🐵 Kyansa – A Special Chimpanzee Arrival

Born via a planned C-section on April 8, Kyansa is a healthy baby girl chimpanzee and a special addition to the zoo’s primate family. Her mom, Mahale, is doing great, and the bond between the two is already something beautiful to witness. Kyansa is named after the Mahale Mountains in Tanzania, where wild chimps still roam.
The best part? The baby boom isn’t over yet! The zoo is expecting two more elephant births early this summer, which means even more floppy ears and tiny trunks are on the way.
If you haven’t visited yet, now’s the perfect time to swing by and say hello to these brand-new zoo babies—you won’t want to miss them! 🐘🐵
